Station 50: National Small Business Week
Station 50: National Small Business Week
In honor of National Small Business Week (May 4-10, 2025), we’re excited to highlight one of the many amazing small businesses that are a part of the Newton community, Station 50! Station 50 is a 1930s-era gas station that has been transformed into a unique event venue. It is owned and operated by Jan Stubby. Jan shared some of her thoughts and experiences about running a small business with us below.
What makes your business unique?
“It’s a 1930s gas station on a historic old H50 highway. It has a lot of history and character left in it. It serves a purpose for small events.”
What is your favorite part about being a small business owner?
“I love to meet the people & hear their stories. Many came to Station 50 to get penny candy & pop.”
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to start their own business?
“Research your ideas. Is it needed in the community? Can you operate by yourself or with family? Many businesses fail because help is not available. Can you get enough capital to finish the project? What are your monthly bills, and what income do you need to pay the bills?”
What is the hardest part about being a small business owner, and what are some things you have done to help overcome this challenge?
“It’s expensive to run a business. You have increased taxes & insurance. There’s always something that comes up. I use the smaller or individual contractors to help do the work needed.
It’s a real joy to do this for the community. The Chamber has done a fine job of supporting Station 50.”
