Heinze Named 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year

Daniels Heinze Jr., Vice President of Community Business at Conrade Insurance Group, was named 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year at the Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet on September 21st, 2023.

The Outstanding Citizen Award is an annual award given to someone in the Newton community who exemplifies hometown pride through service and engagement – someone who devotes an extraordinary amount of their time to the betterment of Newton. The nominee must be a resident of the community for at least ten years and must be involved within the community through their occupation, service clubs, professional organizations, churches, civic organizations, and/or governmental service. To be selected for the Outstanding Citizen award, an individual must be nominated and then selected from a list of nominees by a committee of past award recipients.

Dan was born and raised in Phillipsburg, Kansas and has lived and worked in the Newton area since the 1980s. His career has spanned the range from owning a retail clothing business in downtown Newton, to owning an insurance agency, to now working as Vice President of Community Business at Conrade Insurance Group.

For over four years, Dan proudly served in the U.S. Army 82nd and 101st airborne units. He is currently a member of the Newton American Legion and serves as their Chaplain.

Dan has served in various other community organizations including the Newton Substance Abuse Board, Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, Newton Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and numerous Chamber and City committees and task forces. He was the 2010 Friends of Education Award recipient and is very involved in his local church.

Dan is a proud member of the Newton Lions Club and has served in various positions including Membership Director, the Lion Mascot, and has been President three times. The Newton Lions Club’s membership has grown significantly over the years and is now 80+ strong. This growth would not have happened without Dan’s leadership, influence, and personal enthusiasm for community service.

Chris Conrade, President of Conrade Insurance Group, said of Dan, “Through his involvement in his church, in Lions Club, and Chamber service, Dan has purposefully put himself in the path of others that need a hand. And when someone asks Dan for his help with their own personal development, he always says yes and never asks what’s in it for him. Whether in service to his country or making sure someone’s home is put back together following a loss, Dan always rises above and beyond the call of duty…He’s a relentless advocate for those in need of a voice, and he never stops until the job is done. Every community should be so fortunate to have a Dan Heinze to count on.”

The recipient of the Outstanding Citizen of the Year award is not made public to the community or the recipient until the end of the Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet. As the 2022 Outstanding Citizen, Chip Westfall, announced Dan as the 2023 recipient on September 21st, several members of Dan’s family who came from out of town and many members of the Newton Lion’s Club filled the back of the room in support and celebration of Dan. It is clear that Dan has made an impact on the Newton community.

Fellow Lions Club member Erin McDaniel said, “You couldn’t ask for a better supporter, cheerleader, or community leader than Dan…In a recent podcast interview, Dan said he was grateful to Newton because this community has given him the opportunity to be the businessman and man that he always wanted to be. In turn, Newton is grateful to Dan for his infectious energy for community service, his caring and generous spirit, and for choosing Newton to leave his legacy.”

The Newton Area Chamber of Commerce would like to thank Dan for the extraordinary care that he shows to our communities and the great work that he has done in the service of others. Congratulations, Dan Heinze, our 2023 Outstanding Citizen of the Year.
